Philosophy
Teaching, for me, is not about information transfer. It's about developing sound judgment, deep listening, and musical integrity over time. I teach students to hear more clearly, play with intention, and understand jazz as a living tradition rather than a collection of techniques. Progress comes from clarity, not accumulation.
University Teaching
I serve on the faculty at UCLA in the Global Jazz Studies Department. where I teach jazz guitar and ensemble studies.
My approach emphasizes:
- Sound before speed
- Listening before explanation
- Lineage without imitation
- Discipline without anxiety
Students are encouraged to develop their own voice while remaining grounded in the tradition.
Private Study & Mentorship
I work with a limited number of private students. This is best suited for musicians who:

- Want to refine sound, time, and musical judgment
- Are open to reflection and disciplined practice
This is not a shortcut system or a technique clinic. It is a mentorship grounded in listening, consistency, and context.
